Embodied Carbon and Operational Carbon
Upfront Carbon Assessments · Operational Carbon Reporting · OneClick LCA, NABERS & Climate Active
Carbon accounting in buildings encompasses two distinct but interconnected categories: the carbon embodied in construction materials and processes, and the carbon generated through a building's ongoing energy use and operations. Ark Resources provides specialist advisory across both, helping clients measure, reduce, and report on their full carbon footprint in line with current rating tools and regulatory requirements.
Our team includes accredited NABERS Embodied Carbon Assessors and OneClick LCA specialists who work across residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects at all design stages. We integrate carbon assessment with broader ESD strategy so that carbon outcomes are considered alongside energy, water, and sustainability rating requirements from the outset.
With 25+ years of ESD experience, we are well placed to guide project teams through the rapidly evolving landscape of carbon reporting obligations, voluntary certification programs, and mandatory disclosure requirements.
Buildings are responsible for a significant share of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions, both through the materials used in construction and through the energy consumed during operation. As Australia moves toward net zero, carbon accounting has become a core part of responsible development.
Upfront carbon can represent 50-80% of a building's total lifecycle emissions and is locked in before a building is occupied. Identifying and reducing it early in design is where the greatest impact can be achieved.
Upfront carbon covers the emissions locked into a building through material manufacture, transport, and construction before it is ever occupied. These cannot be reduced through operational improvements once locked in - which is why early design assessment matters most.
Ark Resources provides upfront carbon assessments using industry-leading tools and certified methods, helping design teams identify high-impact materials, compare structural and cladding options, and meet rating tool requirements at all project stages.
Both Alistair Forster and Vincent Logarzo hold NABERS Embodied Carbon Assessor accreditation. Alistair is also a OneClick LCA specialist, enabling multi-tool assessments tailored to your project's rating pathway and design stage.
Accreditation
Both Alistair Forster and Vincent Logarzo are accredited NABERS Embodied Carbon Assessors. Alistair is also a OneClick LCA specialist, bringing multi-tool expertise to each assessment.
Tools Used
OneClick LCA, NABERS Embodied Carbon Tool, EC3 benchmarking, and Green Star Materials calculator.
Required For
Green Star Buildings Materials credits, NABERS Embodied Carbon certification, planning permit conditions, and voluntary carbon benchmarking.
Full LCA modelling using OneClick LCA, covering A1-A5 construction stages and beyond. Material quantities sourced from BIM or documentation, benchmarked against industry targets.
Certified assessments using the NABERS Embodied Carbon Tool, conducted by accredited assessors. Applicable to residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings across Australia.
Carbon assessment and reporting to satisfy Green Star Buildings v1.1 Materials credits, including transparency declarations, EPD identification, and embodied carbon reduction strategies.
Early stage comparison of structural systems, cladding typologies, and material alternatives to guide design decisions that reduce embodied carbon before documentation is locked in.
Assessment covering the full building lifecycle from cradle to grave, including material manufacture, construction, in-use replacement, and end-of-life scenarios.
Quantification of A4-A5 emissions from site activities, plant use, and material transport. Suitable for contractors and developers reporting on supply chain emissions or Green Star compliance.
Operational carbon covers the ongoing greenhouse gas emissions produced through a building's energy use. Addressing it requires a clear picture of emissions today, a strategy to reduce them, and the right certification framework to validate progress.
Ark Resources provides operational carbon assessments and reporting to support Climate Active certifications, mandatory disclosure obligations, and voluntary green building rating schemes. We help building owners, developers, and organisations understand their emissions profile and develop credible pathways to reduce them.
As Australia's electricity grid decarbonises, the landscape is shifting. We keep across evolving NGER obligations, Climate Active methodology updates, and Green Star Buildings requirements so our clients stay ahead of compliance.
Frameworks
National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER), GHG Protocol, and ISO 14064. We align reporting with the framework best suited to your obligations and objectives.
Rating Tools
Climate Active, NABERS Energy, and Green Star Buildings operational credits. We have direct experience integrating carbon outcomes across all three frameworks.
Climate Active
Australia's government-backed carbon neutral certification standard. Ark Resources supports organisations through certification for buildings, precincts, and businesses.
End-to-end support for Climate Active carbon neutral certification for buildings and organisations, including emissions inventory development, methodology review, offset selection, and certification documentation.
Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions inventories for buildings, precincts, and organisations aligned to GHG Protocol or ISO 14064. Suitable for mandatory disclosure, corporate reporting, and voluntary commitments.
Carbon accounting and reporting aligned to Green Star Buildings v1.1 operational credits, including net zero energy targets, renewable energy documentation, and carbon transparency reporting.
Integration of NABERS Energy outcomes with carbon reporting and reduction strategies. We help clients understand the carbon implications of their NABERS rating and plan improvement pathways.
Development of tailored carbon reduction roadmaps covering energy efficiency measures, electrification, renewables integration, and phased decarbonisation planning for existing and new buildings.
Guidance on sourcing high-integrity carbon offsets aligned to Climate Active standards, including review of ACCU-eligible projects and co-benefit considerations for corporate and project-level reporting.
What is the difference between upfront carbon and operational carbon?
Upfront carbon covers the emissions locked into a building before it is occupied, primarily from the manufacture, transport, and installation of construction materials. These are sometimes called embodied or cradle-to-practical-completion emissions. Operational carbon refers to the ongoing greenhouse gas emissions produced during a building's use, primarily from energy consumption. Both need to be measured and managed to achieve genuine whole-of-life carbon neutrality.
When should an upfront carbon assessment be commissioned?
The earlier the better. Design stage carbon comparisons are most effective at concept or schematic design, when structural systems and major material choices are still flexible. Certified assessments such as NABERS Embodied Carbon or Green Star Materials credits can be completed at later stages, but the opportunity to meaningfully reduce carbon diminishes as documentation progresses.
Is a NABERS Embodied Carbon rating mandatory?
NABERS Embodied Carbon is currently a voluntary certification, though it is increasingly being required by planning authorities, institutional clients, and green building rating schemes. Certain Green Star Buildings credits and planning conditions in some Victorian councils already reference embodied carbon reporting. Mandatory disclosure requirements are expected to expand as Australia's climate reporting legislation matures.
What does Climate Active certification involve?
Climate Active is Australia's government-backed carbon neutral certification program. Certification requires the preparation of a GHG emissions inventory, identification and implementation of reduction measures, and offsetting any residual emissions using eligible carbon offsets. Ark Resources supports organisations and building projects through each stage of this process, from initial scoping through to certified submission.
Do you work on projects outside Victoria?
Yes. While Ark Resources is based in Melbourne, our carbon accounting services are delivered nationally. NABERS Embodied Carbon, Climate Active, and Green Star tools all operate across Australian jurisdictions, and our assessors are accredited to deliver certifications regardless of project location.
