Residential Energy Ratings

NatHERS Assessors

Accredited NatHERS assessors  ·  7 star residential ratings  ·  Class 1 homes and Class 2 apartments

Our Expertise

NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) is the national framework used to assess the thermal performance and energy efficiency of Australian homes. It uses climate data and building specifications to model how a home's design will perform across different seasons, providing a star rating from 0 to 10.

Ark Resources has been undertaking NatHERS assessments for residential dwellings for more than 25 years, covering Class 1 and Class 2 buildings, from individual homes through to large-scale apartment developments. This includes new builds as well as additions and alterations to existing Class 1 dwellings. Our assessments help project teams meet NCC compliance requirements and support stronger energy performance outcomes for residents.

Margaret Turner is our senior NatHERS specialist and has contributed to the review and development of NatHERS processes over many years. This depth of experience enables Ark Resources to provide NatHERS advice that goes beyond compliance, helping design teams optimise building envelopes, glazing ratios, and construction specifications to achieve meaningful thermal performance improvements.

NatHERS About NatHERS

NatHERS is the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme, used to assess the thermal performance and energy efficiency of Australian homes. It provides a star rating system to help ensure residential buildings meet minimum energy performance standards under the National Construction Code.

What We Deliver

NatHERS Rating Services

01

Class 1 Residential Ratings

NatHERS thermal performance assessments for new houses and townhouses, achieving NCC 2022 minimum 7-star requirements.

02

Class 2 Apartment Ratings

NatHERS whole-of-home ratings for apartment buildings, assessed at the individual dwelling level and coordinated across the full building envelope.

03

Early-Stage Design Advice

NatHERS modelling at concept and design development stage to identify glazing, insulation and shading strategies that achieve the target star rating cost-effectively.

04

Multi-Dwelling Developments

Coordinated NatHERS assessments across large multi-dwelling projects, including management of variations and updated assessments during construction documentation.

05

NatHERS Peer Review

Independent review of NatHERS reports prepared by other assessors, identification of modelling errors or non-compliant assumptions, and provision of corrected assessments.

06

Section J Coordination

Coordination of NatHERS residential thermal performance with Section J building code compliance for mixed-use and Class 2/3 buildings requiring both pathways.

07

Additions and Alterations to Existing Homes

NatHERS assessments for extensions, renovations and significant alterations to existing Class 1 dwellings. Assessments account for the existing building fabric and identify compliant thermal performance specifications for the new or altered work.

Common Questions

NatHERS FAQs

What is a NatHERS rating and when is it required?
NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) is Australia's national framework for assessing the thermal energy efficiency of homes. A NatHERS certificate (showing a star rating out of 10) is required for all new Class 1 residential buildings and many Class 2 apartments under the NCC. From May 2023, the minimum requirement is 7 stars nationally.
What is the minimum NatHERS star rating required under the NCC?
Under NCC 2022, the minimum NatHERS thermal performance requirement is 7 stars for new Class 1 buildings nationally. For Class 2 apartments, the requirement depends on the assessment pathway: either a 7-star whole-of-home rating or a prescriptive pathway. Ark Resources can advise on the most cost-effective compliance pathway for your project.
How long does a NatHERS assessment take?
A standard NatHERS assessment for a residential dwelling typically takes 3 to 7 business days from receipt of architectural plans, window schedules, and construction specifications. Complex multi-storey or multi-unit developments may take longer. Fast-track options are available.
Can NatHERS help me avoid more expensive construction upgrades?
Yes. Early-stage NatHERS modelling can identify which design changes deliver the greatest improvement in star rating for the least cost, such as glazing specification, shading, roof insulation and wall construction. Engaging Ark Resources at design development stage (rather than construction documentation) typically results in better ratings and lower construction costs.
What is the difference between NatHERS and Section J compliance?
NatHERS is used for Class 1 residential buildings and Class 2 apartments to assess thermal performance. Section J (NCC Volume 1) applies to Class 2-9 commercial and multi-residential buildings and covers the full building envelope and services. JV3 energy modelling is the performance pathway for Section J. Ark Resources provides both NatHERS and Section J / JV3 assessments.
