Introducing ArkiLume: Sunlight Analysis for Planning Approvals
We're pleased to introduce ArkiLume, Ark Resources' sunlight and solar access analysis programme. If your team is working on residential or mixed use projects in NSW or WA, ArkiLume is designed to take one of the more time consuming parts of a planning application off your hands.
- What it does: Assesses an IFC building model against the Housing SEPP and ADG in NSW, and the R Codes in WA.
- Depth of detail: Full resolution, a 3 minute timestep and a 15mm analysis grid, with no simplification, for a single building or a whole precinct.
- Turnaround: Marked up plans and results returned within 8 business hours, fully managed by Ark Resources from start to finish.
ArkiLume works from an IFC building model. Once a model is uploaded, it is assessed against the requirements that apply in each state, the Housing SEPP and ADG in NSW, and the R Codes in WA. In short, the planning rules that set out how much sunlight and solar access a dwelling needs to receive.
Depth of AnalysisFull Resolution, No Simplification
ArkiLume assesses a single building or multiple buildings across a precinct at any design stage, at full resolution, a 3 minute timestep and a 15mm analysis grid, with no simplification. You receive results and images for every timestep and level, including the square metres of sunlit area. Your plans are marked up with results and returned within 8 business hours.
That level of detail also flags which habitable rooms are receiving excessive direct sun, so overheating and NatHERS risk can be addressed early, not just compliance.
How It WorksManaged End to End
Importantly, no one on your team needs to run the software themselves. Ark Resources manages the entire process on your behalf, so you receive a clear, ready to use compliance report without needing to learn a new tool or interpret raw output yourself.
The speed and accuracy of ArkiLume have transformed the way we incorporate solar access analysis into our design process. By enabling informed decision making earlier in the project lifecycle, it has improved productivity, streamlined workflows, and given our teams greater confidence in their design outcomes. The ability to upload an IFC model and quickly receive a comprehensive solar access report, detailed enough to support planning compliance submissions, has been a key factor in our successful adoption of ArkiLume.

"We've built ArkiLume due to a lack of tools out there. The goal is to give architects an accurate and fast results to inform access to sunlight, before it's too late to fix cheaply. It's been rewarding to build, and we're continuing to develop it further into all other aspects of sunlight, overheating, glare, daylight and electric lighting design. I'm excited to see it add value to project teams designing for sunlight."
